Volkswagen Touareg 2004 Overview

The VW Touareg is a luxurious and comfortable 4WD that is surprisingly capable both on the road and off it too. It is a practical vehicle, and on the highway, the Touareg offers a firm but smooth ride, and its handling is responsive for its mass, while in the desert, a full set of off-roading equipment comes in handy, including locking diffs and low-range gearing. The range includes a 3.2-litre V6, a 4.2-litre V8 and a very limited 6.0-litre W12. All models come with a six-speed automatic with manual shift capability. Also standard is Volkswagen's 4Motion permanent all-wheel-drive system. The Touareg seats five, and there is no third row of seats available. The Touareg comes standard with leatherette upholstery, dual-zone climate control with rear seat controls, wood trim, power windows, mirrors and sunroof, electrically adjustable front seating, alloy wheels of various sizes, ABS and many more items. Higher models get leather, auto-dimming outside mirrors with memory; and other luxuries. All models include front, side-impact and curtain airbags.

Volkswagen Touareg 2004 Reliability & Resale Value

Reliability
Resale Value
Known Problems All suffer from premature brake wear, requiring extremely expensive brake overhaul every 15,000 km. Battery dies in early models because navigation system stays on with ignition off, fixed by dealer reprogramming. Battery may die or key may not come out of ignition lock due to a bad battery ground connection under the driver's seat. Inside door handle springs require dealer fix. Computer, differential and transfer case problems lead to wheels binding and premature tyre wear, as if stuck in 4WD mode, and ESP light may come on, fixed by reprogramming the differential control module. Models with air suspension may sag after sitting because residual air valve corrodes, but revised valve is available from dealer. Early models need auto gearbox reprogramming to fix shifting delays and harshness. Various electrical problems affect instrumentation lights, rain-sensing wipers, temperature gauge and handbrake warning beeper, among others.
