The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid coupe powered by a high-performance electric motor in the front, which drives the front axle, and a mid-mounted turbocharged 3-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine powering the rear wheels. In 2019, it got a slight facelift and a bigger battery, giving it a small bump up in horsepower. The petrol engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic, while the electric motor is attached to a 2-stage automatic transmission. On electricity alone, the i8 can travel about 30 Km, before the petrol engine has to intervene and recharge the batteries. Another interesting feature is the car's ability to switch between front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. But that very well depends on driver mood and more importantly, the existing electric juice. The i8 features a perfect 50:50 weight distribution, which BMW claims to have achieved using lightweight materials like carbon-fibre and aluminium. Safety standards are high in the i8 as the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system includes the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assist, Brake Standby, Brake Drying function, Start-Off Assistant, Fading Compensation, Active Differential Brake (ADB-x), Driving dynamic impellent torque pre-control, E-Traction, as well as the push button-activated Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) mode. Front airbags and side airbags integrated into the seat backrests, plus head/curtain airbags for both rows of seats, are all fitted as standard, as are three-point inertia-reel seatbelts including belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats.
