BMW X3 2005 Overview

The smallest 4WD in BMW's lineup debuted in 2004, and got a facelift in 2005 to improve its ugly looks. The X3 slots in below the more expensive first-generation X5, but has almost the same passenger space, more cargo volume, and is also lighter and therefore more fuel-efficient. Like the X5, the X3 seats five passengers, has a liftgate with a fixed glass window, and includes BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. Engines include a weak 2.0-litre 4-cylinder, a 2.5-litre 6-cylinder and a 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while a 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate is an option. The ground clearance is far from impressive, so X3 is only good for light-duty off-roading. The all-wheel-drive system lacks low-range gearing, but includes a hill descent control that automatically limits speed down steep grades. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. Standard wheels are 17-inch, but 18-inch are available in a Sport Package that also includes firmer suspension and sport front seats. A sunroof and rear glass skylight are optional. Leather upholstery is available, while other options include a crude navigation system, steering-linked xenon headlamps, and front and rear parking sensors.

BMW X3 2005 Reliability & Resale Value

Reliability
Resale Value
Known Problems Mechanically reliable. Check for worn interior trim and working electrics. Battery dying after parked for few days most likely due to problem in body control module. Battery might die overnight if the key is left in the ignition. The transmission may intermittently revert to fail-safe mode due to multiplexing problem, fixed by reprogramming. If engine pings under light load, idles too high or stumbles on acceleration when cold, ECM reprogramming is required. First-year models had problems with ignition coils, replaced under warranty. Automatic headlights may not turn off due to communication fault between rain sensor and headlight module. The sunroof may not close in hot weather because the side-channels expand and cause the anti-trap sensors to stop the motor.
