Saab 9-3 2005 Overview

The 9-3 midsize sports sedan has been around for a while now, spawning variants such as the Sport Combi station wagon and the evergreen convertible. Trim levels include the confusing Linear, Arc, Vector and Aero trims. The base model features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine known as the 1.8t, a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic, 16-inch alloy wheels, power windows and mirrors, a power driver's seat, and an infotainment audio system with 150 watts and seven speakers. Mid-level engines are both also 2.0-litre turbo, known as the 2.0t and the 2.0T, with either manual or automatic. The top Aero models feature the new 2.8-litre V6 turbo engine, known as the 2.8T, and a choice of 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions, along with 17-inch alloy wheels, the sophisticated ReAxs four-wheel steering system, lowered sports suspension and stability control. Not all engines come in all body styles, though all are available in Aero form. Optional features, some of which are standard on higher models, include a glass sunroof, wooden trim, integrated telephone system with SIM card reader & Bluetooth phone connection, headlamp washers, Xenon headlamps, 6-disc in-dash changer, keyless entry and more. Safety features include available front, side and curtain airbags, along with ABS brakes and available ESP system.

Known Problems Ignition control unit of 2.0-litre engine prone to burning out. Turbo engines prone to sludging if oil and filter not changed properly every 8000 kms, as old oil needs to be flushed and drained from sump plug. Failure reports of steering column bearings on early cars. Various rattles and noises from dashboard common. Faults with LCD display. Reports of power windows, stereo, sunroof, electric seat and a/c failure. Parking gear may get stuck. Peeling cabin trim. Various random electrical issues. Flawed engine blocks discovered in 2007 replaced under warranty.
