THE BAD

Awful fuel economy, slow, too big for city streets

Lincoln Navigator 2005 Overview

The Navigator is the Lincoln-badged luxury version of the Ford Expedition, a full-size 4WD known to be smooth, stable and refined for the most part. Mildly facelifted for 2005, its four-wheel-independent suspension is sophisticated, providing better on-road ride and handling, while low-range gearing is available for off-roading. The standard engine for 2005 onwards was a revised 5.4-litre V8 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. What the Navigator does best is move large quantities of people and gear, with its perfectly flat cargo area and third-row seat, with the ability to carry up to eight passengers. The interior was different from its Ford cousin, with faux satin-nickel trim and real wood inserts. Other features include 18-inch wheels, optional power-folding running boards, power liftgate, leather seats and wood trim. Options included a voice-activated touchscreen navigation system, THX audio system, rear-seat DVD player, and HID headlights. Multiple airbags, a tyre-pressure monitor and stability control were standard, with Roll Stability Control an option.

Lincoln Navigator 2005 Reliability & Resale Value

Reliability
Resale Value
Known Problems Truck-derived engine and gearbox are durable. The rear wheels may chatter during tight turns, requiring installation of a revised clutch pack in the limited-slip differential. The retractable running boards sometimes don't work because either dirt collects in their tracks, or the motor and linkage fails. Load-leveling sensor for rear suspension might fail.
