Jeep Cherokee 2005 Overview
Tougher than most compact 4WDs, the Jeep Cherokee, also known as the Liberty in some markets, seats five people and can carry their gear too. Powered by a 3.7-litre V6, it is just about adequate for the streets. Early models got a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, while post-facelift models got the automatic or a 6-speed manual. Fold the rear seats and it can move two people and some serious cargo. Turn off the pavement, and it can negotiate most trails with confidence. All-new for 2002, the Cherokee was extensively updated for 2005. From 2006, all models come with Jeep's Electronic Stability Program, ABS brakes, Electronic Roll Mitigation, and all-speed traction control. Standard on all models is Command-Trac, a conventional part-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case. Full-time Selec-Trac is optional, and retains a low range for serious off-roading. Standard features also include power windows, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, six-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo, grey fender flares, 16-inch steel wheels and traction control. Options include leather, cruise control, 16-inch aluminium wheels, fog lamps, body-colour fender flares, roof rails, functional rock rails and more.
Jeep Cherokee 2005 Reliability & Resale Value
Reliability | |
---|---|
Resale Value | |
Known Problems | Few reports of engine sludge build-up in pre-facelift models. Early models have failing cooling-fan relays. If water leaks into passenger-side floor, a new a/c evaporator drain-hose is needed. Dealer can fix moaning rear brakes by installing "anti-rattle" strips. Flickering instrument-panel lights means new body control module is needed. Engine chirping noises caused by serpentine drive-belt secondary-idle pulley, which should be replaced by a shorter belt from dealer. Transmission may suffer delayed response after sitting overnight due to split in the filter within fluid-cooler return line. Some reports of total transmission failure. See if factory recall for models before 2007 was performed, for lower ball joints which could rust and break. Rear cargo-area carpet wears quickly. Problems with power windows, central locking and tailgate lock. Rear differential, fuel pump and water pump may fail before 100,000 kms. |
