The Gullwing is back for 2010 on a completely new and unique platform, paying homage to the original 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. But the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is supposed to be an everyday-use supercar, ditching McLaren in favour of in-house development by AMG. The car's trademark feature is the set of 'gullwing' doors that open upwards, requiring less room to open than conventional coupe doors. Underneath the long bonnet is the usual AMG-built 6.2-litre V8 engine, retuned and mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automanual gearbox in this application. A lightweight structure molded largely from carbon-fibre and aluminium double-wishbone suspension form the basics of the SLS. Among other things, the centre console incorporates the AMG DRIVE UNIT, which enables SLS owners to customise their vehicle set-up, while the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is operated by means of the E-SELECT lever. Beyond the usual power accessories and comfort features such as automatic a/c and cruise control, the simplistic interior can be customised in various colours, and can be fitted with options such as sports seats, metal trim, various leather choices, nicer paint and carbon-fibre appliqués. Further options include different 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, pricey Bang & Olufsen stereo and a sports steering wheel.
