Available only in a few GCC markets, this outdated version of the Land Cruiser got a big facelift for 2008, but the mechanicals underneath remain the same. Staying alive simply because people keep buying them. The popular pickup version became known as the LC79 from 2010, by virtue of a new petrol engine. It is built to Toyota's high standard of quality so you get unsurpassed durability and reliability. Powered by either a 4.0-litre V6 petrol, or in some markets, an old 4.2-litre inline-6 diesel, mated to only 5-speed manuals, these trucks are very rudimentary, unlike the American "luxury" trucks. Standard features include a radio with cassette player and 2 speakers, manual a/c, power steering and fabric seats. Options on higher models include power door mirrors, electric winch, 16-inch steel wheels, power windows and central locking. If you are lucky, you might get an optional CD player, but not much else. Standard safety features include nothing more than a fire extinguisher, although some markets now get optional dual front airbags. Conversely, the Saudi market gets several variations, with available features such as a 10-seater covered bed, keyless entry, cooled glove-box, heavy-duty suspension and sand tyres. Incidentally, the pickup is regionally popular for modifying into drag racers due to their durability, although the loss of the old 4.5-litre petrol engine may put a dent in that.
