Though the new-for-2011 Volkswagen Touareg looks a lot like a simple facelift, this is apparently an all-new model compared to the last one. The only petrol engine on offer in this 5-seater at launch is a carryover 3.6-litre V6, and later also with a 4.2-litre V8, both mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive, but now without low-range gearing. This VW is a proper crossover now, with independent four-wheel-suspension and a simple terrain-select system. Largely optional features include cloth or leather upholstery, CD/MP3 stereo, navigation, Bluetooth phone, intelligent keyless entry, starter button, panoramic sunroof, real wood trim, power-folding rear seat, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, lane departure warning system, blind-spot monitor, pre-crash system with full automatic emergency braking, ABS, a full set of front and side airbags, parking assist with four cameras, adaptive air suspension with continuous damping control and adaptive roll compensation, LED tail lamps, HID headlights, power-adjustable front seats with memory, seat heaters and a choice of 18-inch, 19-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels.
