Genesis GV80 Concept hints at future SUV model

Hyundai’s new luxury brand Genesis showcased the GV80 Concept at the 2017 New York Auto Show, indirectly confirming a new luxury SUV for their still-small line-up.

Under the hood, Genesis claims “the GV80 Concept utilises the latest plug-in hydrogen fuel cell electric technology to combine eco-performance and capability.”

Looking at the exterior, large fenders house 23-inch alloy wheels designed to reduce weight and cool the large brake system. Electronic door handles sit flush underneath the concept’s crease line. The lower rear fascia has integrated vents to cool elements of the alternative powertrain.

The GV80 Concept’s interior features a “Human Machine Interface” that offers users control through the use of a new multi-function interactive controller with capacitive touch.

The horizontal 22-inch curved OLED display presents two distinct zones, providing separate driver and passenger experiences. An ash wood lower centre console integrates the controller and metal inlays with capacitive touch capabilities. The top of the controller features a concave gorilla glass touchpad and metal wheel with handwriting recognition.

The custom inlayed console runs through the centre spine of the SUV, creating four separated zones. Each passenger has access to the capacitive touch inlays and an individual entertainment system.

While the GV80 is clearly far away from a production model, it will be interesting to see if Genesis gets a premium platform borrowed from their sedans, or is just a warmed-over Hyundai Grand Santa Fe.
