2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek EV crossover debuts in China

A plug-in hybrid, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, was one of the reasons Mitsubishi was able to find some traction in many markets that were slipping away from them. Now, they are giving the same green formula another shot. Here is the fully electric 2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek EV.

The name Airtrek may ring a bell for some JDM fans. It is what Mitsubishi used to call the original Outlander when it was launched in Japan. This time, they are using the name for a vehicle that can be an alternative to the Outlander.

The design of the Airtrek is properly Mitsubishi. It features a split headlight setup with LED DRLs above the bumper while the headlight cluster sits under it. The grille is closed off, like most other EVs, with large bars. Overall the front fascia of the Airtrek is pretty bold.

The side is spiced up with two-tone alloy wheels and pop-out door handles. The rear is slightly away from the generic Mitsubishi design, slanting towards the latest Skodas a bit.

Inside, it is the usual modern EV affair. A massive touchscreen swallows almost all the controls, along with a large DIS. The navigation system comes with augmented reality as well, to jazz the tech up a little.

The juice for the Airtrek comes from a 69.9-kWh battery. This is good for 520 km, as per the CLTC cycle being used in China. The motor hooked up to this battery can churn out 181 hp. Nothing to write home about here but the instant torque from the electric motor can help add some zing to your grocery runs.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek is going on sale in China next year. No word on the international launch as of now but with the Outlander PHEV getting a decent reception, we see no reason why they should not ship it overseas.
