It has been quite a long time since we posted an update about our Renault Megane. Nine months, three dealer services, and 37,000 km later, the odometer in our Megane now ticked over at 67,246 km, thanks to my other business that requires a lot of driving. Contrary to popular belief, the Megane seems to be easy on running costs even with dealer maintenance, so its Nissan underpinnings are a blessing.

The Ministry of Economy announced recently that all cars must be serviced at every 10,000 km, effectively banning the 5,000 km intervals that several Japanese-brand car dealers follow, something that consumers have effectively thought of as a rip-off all these years. Long-term update: Vivek’s Renault Megane enjoying the summer sun

So it has been a year and 30,000 km since we bought our Renault Megane. Buying this car was an experiment, as it is the least noticed and least trusted car by the general public. Contrary to popular belief though, the car has chugged along rather well, probably due to the fact that it is almost purely a Nissan underneath, from almost every nut and bolt, right up to the engine and transmission. It may not have exceeded our expectations, but it has never let us down either. For the price paid, we actually do not have any complaints.

Luxgen, Taiwan’s own automotive brand, has finally arrived in the UAE. Better known for building Toyota Corollas in Taiwan on a contract basis, we last encountered Luxgen here in 2010 when we had a chat with the CEO about their Middle East plans. The brand already set up dealerships in Oman and Saudi Arabia in the past few years.
