First drive: Lexus LS 460 2013 in the UAE

First drive: Lexus LS 460 2013 in the UAE

As I’m flying over Dubai and Sharjah towards Ras Al Khaimah in a Bell 412 crammed in with 13 other people, I am thinking that helicopter travel isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. The flight is noisy, tight and industrial, completely at odds with the “luxury” experience we were supposed to be having. But damn is it quick. We reached our destination in only 20 minutes, landing at the Banyan Tree resort at the northern tip of the Emirates, having enjoyed a great view and not feeling fatigued at all for the 2013 Lexus LS launch event.

Long-term update: Our Renault Safrane is a music-video star

Long-term update: Our Renault Safrane is a music-video star

We’ve made it a point to upgrade our self-owned fleet with iconic cars, ditching anonymous cars like the Peugeot 307 and the Mitsubishi Galant and replacing them with stuff like the Honda S2000 and the Range Rover Vogue. But then why are we keeping the lowly Korean-built 2009 Renault Safrane around? Well, it just became the most iconic car in our fleet, having appeared in the hottest music video of this decade and the next.

First drive: 2012 McLaren MP4-12C in Dubai

It isn’t everyday that media people get to drive a supercar. Well, in our case, we never get to drive a supercar. The closest we’d come before was the Nissan GT-R, but that’s stretching it. But then we finally managed to talk ourselves into the driver’s seat of one. We skipped secretive Ferrari, Lamborghini et al and went straight to the McLaren MP4-12C, the British carmaker’s first proper model since they redefined the meaning of “supercar” more than a decade ago with the McLaren F1.

Video of the week: McLaren MP4-12C roars in Dubai

We get lots of requests to do videos, but we generally don’t waste time churning out boring nonsense. If you haven’t heard already, we drove a McLaren MP4-12C recently. And we have video too. For footage that barely lasts a minute, you can see the launch control, the air-brake spoiler, the active suspension, the braking power and even the exhaust note, all shot during our road-test just outside Dubai. Jaguar ‘Are You Alive’ campaign sky-diving event

To reflect the ethos of the “Are You Alive” campaign, Jaguar recently hosted a 2-day event aimed at challenging attendees on how alive they felt throughout the experience – particularly while driving the flagship Jaguar XJ and when jumping out of a plane from 13,000 feet over Dubai’s iconic Palm Jumeirah on a sky-diving trip.

Video of the week: Mini parallel-parking record broken

While some pro drivers get all the fanfare, it seems there is no shortage of good drivers around the world who can do the impossible. Chinese driver Han Yue has officially broken the record for parallel-parking in the tightest space. Han managed to shave off 7 cm from the record, drifting into a space of just 15 cm longer than his vehicle during an attempt at the May launch in Beijing of a new special edition of the Mini called The Chinese Job. The record has changed hands five times in the past two years, with Patrik Folco holding the previous record of a gap 22 cm longer than the car in April.

Long-term update: 2012 Lexus IS 300C goes public

When you’re asking people for their opinions on a car they do not own, you have to keep in mind that there are three kinds of people you are likely to encounter. First, there would be the car enthusiasts, who prefer cars with a sporting edge to them, and actually own cars with a sporting edge, such as a Dodge Charger or a Honda S2000. Second are the kind of people who you’d find on the street, who spend more time on sports and news websites than on car websites, and they drive regular cars such as a Toyota Prado or a Honda Civic.
